At face value SMSFs seem little different to other super funds other than the obvious flexibility of control and the ability to do some interesting investing such as borrowing to purchase property. The reality for the unwary client and adviser can however be very different. To use an extreme, but relevant and very real example, it would be unheard of for an adviser in the retail super world to have to tell his clients that they have done something with a potential 5 year prison sentence attached! It doesn’t go down too well and neither do the other lesser problems that can occur in the world of SMSFs.
The high level advisory skills you already have are vital to consulting to SMSFs but we believe that they require a different way of thinking and a very different process of client engagement to what traditional retail-focussed advisers are used too.
